Charlie Kelly serves up a Club feast



Charlie Kelly serves up a cordon bleu treat for the St. John’s G.A.A. Club, writes Michael McGee



St. John’s G.A.A Club held its Boston Tea Party in the Radissson Hotel on Saturday January 31st last. Over 220 people attended the lavish event. It was sponsored by Charlie Kelly Barbers, Teelling Street Sligo. 

Joint Club Chairman Niall Gordon spoke and welcomed everyone to the Social Evening in the St. John’s Calendar. He began by expressing his gratitude to Charlie Kelly, Barbers of Teeling Street Sligo for sponsoring the Club’s Boston Tea Party.  Niall, wished Charlie every success in his new premises

Niall paid tribute to Former Chairman Colm Nevin for his efforts after having served as 2 years as Club Chairman. Niall jokingly added that “he did such a great job it took two of us to replace him.”  The Chairman congratulated Colm on his appointment as Superintendent in the Garda Siochana.  Sharon Smith Secretary and Gerry Quinn Treasurer were also sincerely thanked by the Chairman for their commitment to the club.

Christy Murphy, Owen McLean & Willie O'Grady were complimented for their efforts through out the year.

Michael & Mary Scanlon were also thanked as club sponsors in the year ahead while the Chairman expressed his gratitude to John Byrne of Scoda Carraroe  for sponsoring the Junior Team.  “We will look forward to working with him in the future”, stated the Chairman.  All the underage managers were thanked for their efforts particularly Fergal Henry who guided the Minor team to league success in 2014. 

 Also thanked was John Greene Social Club Chairman, Finance Committee led by Seamus Flanagan and pitch committee Ray Henry. The Chairman gave a detailed account on grounds and clubhouse improvements in the coming year.  Fergal Kelly too was warmly praised for coming on board as the new Club Chairman of Bord na Nog.  “He is a natural leader and we are optimistic with his proposals for the year ahead” said the Chairman.
The Senior team manager Tommy McManus and selectors  Sean Brown & Niall Walsh  were wished every success in the year ahead by the Chairman. 

John Greene Social Club Chairman complimented the Committee for their Trojan efforts in making sure the Club’s Boston Tea Party would be a runaway success.  “For the past four weeks, bad nights and cold meeting rooms the lady’s gave 100%  and never missed a night and a huge thank you must go to them.” 

Following the speeches there were a number of auctions for a signed Football & Hurling All-Star Jerseys. Also auctioned off were 2 premium tickets for the Script concert in Croke Park which garnered a lot of interest.  The energetic  D.J.Seamus McManus provided the musical entertainment with rocking bingo and a disco.
